Intestinal permeability

The intestinal barrier is a complex system formed by the group of micro-organisms that live in the intestine (microbiota), our defences (immune system) and the cells in the intestine (intestinal wall). The main function of the intestinal barrier is to control the passage of substances from the digestive tract into the blood so that they are distributed throughout the body (organs and systems).

Intestinal permeability can be defined as the ability of a specific substance to penetrate through the intestinal barrier.

Alterations in the microbiota, in the immune system or in the intestinal wall can lead to an increase in intestinal permeability. These alterations can be caused by several factors: changes in dietary intake, some medications (e.g. antibiotics), psychosocial changes (e.g. stress), etc.

An increase in intestinal permeability causes unwanted substances to pass into the bloodstream and be distributed throughout our body, causing uncontrolled effects.

The malfunctioning of the intestinal barrier and thus the increased intestinal permeability is related to many alterations in one’s health condition:

  •  Digestive disorders: celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis.
  •  Rheumatologic disorders: rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis.
